Over 50 years of history and counting!
Determined to have their own purpose built range the members started fundraising. Over the next 7 years a lot of blood, sweat and tears were shed to build a 25 yard, 6 point range on land in Soho St, leased from Wigan Borough Council. Little did anyone realise how valuable this land was to become. Asda built one of their stores on land adjacent to the club. From 1987 due to a need to expand, following a number of attempts by Asda to persuade the club to relocate, in 2001 it was decided by the members to accept a very generous compensation offer, and the range closed.
It was actually in 1995 that discussions for a new range started and an 8 man sub-committee was set up to look at designs and locations.
Finally Park St was chosen as the site, and architect David Young was given the brief to design a two storey building with 3 ranges, a 10 metre air weapons range, 25 metre and 50 metre ranges for weapons up to .455, both with spacious preparation rooms, and finally a lounge area with adjoining kitchen. Planning permission was granted and in May 2002 work began by Winstanleys of Rainford. The Club took possession of the building in January 2003, and members then started the task of fitting out the interior which was completed in September 2003, and the Club finally opened for shooting.
November the 8th 2003 was the official opening night, local dignitaries were invited and Kate Hoey MP performed the opening ceremony. All were impressed by the facilities on offer and the hard work put in by the members. The Club has had lots of praise and admiration by visitors and various shooters including the Scottish International team, and lately the British Olympic team, who have used our ranges for winter practice.
So if you want to try your hand at shooting in a purpose built indoor range with superb facilities give us a call, you will have a warm welcome at Wigan Target Sports Club.
